Orange County Psychiatrist Sentencing to More Than 4 Years in Federal Prison for Writing Illegal Prescriptions

June 23, 2019

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Dr. Robert Perez, a psychiatrist who practices in Santa Ana was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Andrew J. Guilford to 57 months in federal prison for issuing prescriptions for dangerous and addictive narcotics without a legitimate medical purpose. Perez issued prescriptions to known drug dealers in exchange for cash knowing the drugs would be sold on the street.

In February, Perez pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. Perez admitted that he wrote and sold prescription medication to individuals he had never met or examined. He also created fictitious medical records for drug customers to provide a justification for the prescription.

In his plea agreement with prosecutors, Perez admitted he wrote fraudulent prescriptions to patients for 240 pills of Adderall, 300 pills of Roxicodone, and 250 pills of hydrocodone. This case resulted in the conviction of Perez by a joint drug operation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Costa Mesa Police Department.
