Australian Model Avoids Jail for Assaulting Flight Attendant

July 27, 2019

Adau Mornyang cried in Federal Court as she avoided a prison sentence despite assaulting a flight attendant on a plane from Australia to Los Angeles.

Facing up to 21 years in federal prison, U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney sentenced Mornyang to 100 hours of community service and three years of probation.

“I am a human being who made a terrible mistake,” she told the judge on Monday at her sentencing hearing.

Judge Carney described Mornyang’s background and personal history as a “tragic history” of sexual and physical abuse.

In March, a Los Angeles jury found Mornyang guilty of a felony charge of interfering with a flight crew member and one misdemeanor count of assault.

The incident came about after the former Miss World Australia finalist ordered “several glasses of wine.” But when she was denied more drinks, she yelled obscenities and racial slurs, and struck a flight attendant. She was immediately detained and handcuffed by an air marshal.
