U.S. House Rep. Duncan Hunter’s Wife Pleads Guilty in Federal Court

June 15, 2019

In August 2018, U.S. House Representative Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret Hunter, we indicted in the Southern District of California after the government charged them both with 60 counts of misappropriating campaign funds. The pair spent the money on luxury trips, Costco shopping sprees, and personal items. When the indictment was made public, Hunter blamed his wife claiming she “handled the finances” while maintaining his innocence.

Today, Margaret Hunter entered a guilty plea to a single count of conspiring to use campaign funds for family vacations to Italy totaling $200,000 in fraudulent spending. Her plea also involved her admission to 30 illicit transactions.

Margaret, through her attorney, stated “I am saddened for the hurt I have caused my family and others. I understand that there will be more consequences stemming from my actions…” In her plea agreement, Hunter agreed to cooperate with the government should she be deemed necessary in hopes of receiving a lenient sentence.

If Duncan Hunter is convicted, he could face up to five years in federal prison.
