Ex-LA Sheriff Sentenced to Prison for Lying to the FBI
Byron Dredd, a former Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy, was sentenced to one year in federal prison for lying to FBI agents about a beating of a handcuffed man inside the Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail.
Appearing at sentencing before U.S. District Judge Dale Fischer, the court stated, “Not only did Mr. Dredd lie to the FBI in 2012, he lied to the jury at trial.” Fischer went on to say, “The jury didn’t believe him, and I didn’t believe him either.”
Dredd stood trial after witnessing the beating of an inmate and falsely told the FBI that the inmate was the aggressor. Moreover, Dredd told agents that the inmate swung at a deputy after attempting to escape. The jury determined those were lies since the inmate was handcuffed during the entire encounter.
Fischer commented that Dredd clearly “betrayed the public’s trust” under “extremely aggravating circumstances.”
After Dredd serves his prison sentence, the Court ordered him to be placed on supervised release for three years.
