LAPD Officer Pleads Not Guilty After Cold Case DNA Hit Links Him to Rape Charges

July 21, 2019

A 10 year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department is facing life in prison after the department’s investigation into sexual assault and rape allegations linked him to another unsolved rape in 2015. William Rodriguez was arrested and charged with two counts of forcible rape with a special allegation of multiple victims. Rodriguez is accused of forcibly raping a female acquaintance at his home in November 2018.

LAPD Police Chief Michel Moore stated, “When one of our own breaks the trust of the people we are sworn to protect and to serve, it tarnishes the badge we all wear proudly on our chests,” he said in a statement.

The LAPD stated that when Rodriguez’s DNA was entered into the FBI DNA index, they received a “cold hit” on a sexual assault that occurred in August 2015. According to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, that rape involved another woman who was assault “under similar circumstances.”

Rodriguez was recently assigned to the valley traffic division. However, both assaults occurred when Rodriguez was off-duty. He appeared in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom and pleaded not guilty and he is being held on a $1.2 million bail. Rodriguez is due back in court on July 30.
